Daniel sent his first message on WhatsApp three weeks before the trip. He wanted to propose in Hoi An and he wanted it photographed, without Mia guessing anything.
The plan
We booked the VIP shoot at 17:00, which ends on a lantern boat at dusk. To Mia it was a couples shoot, the kind they had talked about for months. Our photographer Rin knew the rest.
On the water
By 17:40 the lanterns were on. Rin asked them to stand at the bow for one last photo and moved to the stern, as she does on every boat shoot. Daniel knelt. Rin had the long lens ready.
I kept shooting and tried not to cry. The boatman did cry.

What they took home
Thirty-eight edited photos the next afternoon, from the walk through the old town to the ring. Mia says the photo she likes most is one from before, when she still had no idea.
